Big Green ribbon cutting opens future of Baseline parks

October 17, 2024

The Big Green was envisioned as a place within Baseline that would bring big groups of people together. On its first official day as a park, September 26, 2024, that vision came true. 150 people showed up at a ribbon cutting that featured live music, food and drinks—celebrating the new Broomfield park.

Although the Big Green is just 5-acres of Baseline’s planned 62-acre Parklands central park system, it’s a significant first step.

“It is a milestone for us because this represents the first in multiple phases of park development in a community that’s a little different from other communities in the area … highly sustainable, a bit more urban and when you’re a bit more urban these open spaces are so incredibly important,” says Kyle Harris, Senior VP Master Planned Communities, McWhinney, developer of Baseline. “This is the premiere first phase that we’re excited to activate with concerts and seasonal events.”

The Big Green will connect to the rest of Baseline via trails and greenways. Eventually it will even connect by regional trail to downtown Broomfield.

“The Big Green is where the community is really going to come together. Not only for this community but for the region and Broomfield, this is going to be the real gathering place for Baseline,” Greg Dorolek, Principal Partner Wenk Associates, landscape architects charged with designing Baseline’s parks system.

“Buildings come and go,” Dorolek continues, “but parks are here to stay and so there’s a legacy around them. They’re a place where families get together, where people get together and it’s about what’s this going to be like in 50 years. And that’s what’s really special about the work we get to do.”

Even before the ribbon cutting, The Big Green proved to be an important new asset to Baseline.

“I come out here at least once a day at the start to see the sunrise, as I journal and meditate,” says Sean, Baseline resident. “So it’s a great quiet place and it’s also a great space—now and in the future—to connect with other residents.”
